EDITORIAL:

This year there is one candidate for District Attorney of Tompkins County, providing one view of criminal justice. There's need for a second view.

The chief prosecutor of criminal acts certainly has a primary obligation to protect the public from repeated violations. When people kill, or rape or rob, they need to be restrained and retrained. Their victims and their victims' families need healing. And society needs justice.

Punishment by itself does not do these. It merely sends millions of Americans to expensive crime schools called prisons. Our dungeon economy diverts America's wealth from schools, health care, environmental repair, and the creation of enjoyable work.

The legacy of single-minded punishment, without retraining, is endless bitterness, deeper racial division, and erosion of civil liberties. http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/Misc/coughlin.htm

It brutalizes both violators and the violated, prison staff and the rest of us. The dealth penalty particularly is a death penalty for social progress.

Fortunately a national movement has arrived called Restorative Justice, which seeks to integrate offenders into society, to restore to them and their victims the sense of worth and purpose and safety that crime takes from us all.

This restoration is promoted by youth courts and drug courts, and by bringing offenders and victims together to see one anothers' humanity and to obtain apology. http://www.restorativejustice.org

More broadly, the source of much street crime is corporate greed which damages community job stability for the sake of excess profit. Often, when jobs end, homes and dignity are lost. Often, when jobs end, marriages end. http://www.corpwatch.org

Rather than wait for this crime to happen, the District Attorney should prosecute corporate activity which is not responsible to society-- which damages families, neighborhoods, and the natural environment.

The community should reward businesses which hire offenders. Likewise each offender should be systematically connected to community mentors who will make it easier for them to stay on probation. http://www.ithaca.ny.us/Orgs/OAR

We are better protected by a system of rewards more extensive than our system of punishments.

Therefore there's need for a write-in D.A. candidacy, for those who believe there is greater promise exploring these directions than through expensive, desperate and failed programs.

>From the Ithaca HOUR Board: VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES WITH ITHACA HOURS

"Here in Ithaca we print our own money, which is redeemable at hundreds of locally owned businesses, and with thousands of individuals. By supporting each other, we keep wealth local and create employment. Moreover, our colorful money is more fun than dollars could ever be and it builds a sense of community among us. Ithaca HOURS is now seeking volunteers to help strengthen our local currency system. We need folks for administrative tasks such as data entry to update our directory of members and distribution of HOURS literature to hotels, restaurants and stores. We also invite you to join our Retail Relations team, which will be interviewing local businesses to 'take the pulse' of the system and gather important information on how HOURS are circulating, as well as encouraging greater use of Hours." Contact Laurie at [email protected]

FIRST STEP to participating in the local currency process: buy Ithaca HOURS from GreenStar or Alternatives Credit Union, spend them elsewhere
