MINI-EDITORIAL

The Ithaca Journal's editorialist is upset (7/11/01) that Janet Steiner, director of the county's public library, has sent an email to "countless" residents sharing her concern that an inter-city bus station across the street could damage library utilization.
The editorial characterizes Steiner's email as "inappropriate" and an "unfortunate lobbying effort" by the "golden child [TCPL] who is accustomed to getting his or her own way."
The Journal needs to be reminded that, thanks to email lists, effective conversations about public issues are shifting beyond its pages.
Steiner's email is a timely and responsible assertion of concern, by someone more familiar with library operations than the Journal editor. **************************************************************************

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR OF ITHACA COMMUNITY NEWS:

"Thank you. I appreciate being part of the 4,114! Keep the news coming!!!" -- TB at Ithaca College

"Thanks, Paul, for listing Educate the Children! Perhaps we'll get some volunteers from that! Take care, Susanna"

"Thank you very much for sending so much information about Ithaca, it is really interesting to know what is going on. My name is Maria and I am from Madrid, Spain. My husband and I will stay in Ithaca for a long while and I miss more cultural events from Europe. If you go to the movies there are always movies from the United States. I have lived in several countries in the world and even while Ithaca is quite plural, still not too many people speak another language and are not too open to the rest of the world.
"Ithaca is always very pro-environment but I have not heard of any movement against the NO sign campaign to the treaty of Kyoto by the Bush administration.
"The United States has less than 5 percent of the world's population and produces 25 percent of the carbon dioxide. Emissions from the United States power plants alone exceed the total emissions of 146 other nations combined. But this country is just getting ready to build lots of new plants to meet the energy needs.
"I wish my job will consist in teaching people how this world is a wonderful place that everybody needs to explore. I have encountered some people that did not even know where Spain was-- they situated my country in the south of Venezuela. I heard that Ithaca has good school system....
"I am ready to make a difference! Lets teach! Best Regards, Maria"
