"I'm writing from Belgium, being here for a year on

birkenstock volvo alternative-ness of ithaca, and the great initiatives
that come out of our town. One of these is the entirely youth-run

embody the spirit of youth empowerment and entrepreneurship.

"It was interesting to read of the vegan pit bull, but I
want to make a point that was not emphasized in the piece: putting your
dog or cat on a vegetarian or vegan diet is possible, but requires a
lot of commitment and knowledge. Unlike humans, who are esentially
herbivores, dogs and cats are carnivores, and have significantly
different nutritional needs than humans. Anyone who is considering a
non-meat diet for their pet needs to do the necessary research to make
sure that those nutritional needs are met, and not make the switch
casually. It sounds like Heidi Tremaine, a biologist and owner of the
pit bull, did that research.
---"My other comment is on the wind power birdkill URL. The link cited
makes some good points. It seems quite plausible that parts of the
government are using concern over birds as an excuse to oppose wind
power. However, as the page also notes, wind turbines, especially in
the wrong places, DO kill birds. (The site also mentions my big
concern: cell towers, certain of which have been well documented as
bird killers.)
---"The article becomes disingenuous, however, when it falls back on a
popular refrain of large industry: "well, other things kill more
birds." The reality of bird kills does not mean that wind power should
be abandoned as an option. We should go forward with our eyes open to
the implications, and not rationalize the impacts away just because
wind power is PC. We need to study and quantify the impacts, learn how
to minimize them, and make objective judgements as to whether the
benefits outweigh the costs.
---"And I wouldn't want those who didn't click on the URL to think it
dispelled the myth of tower kills. It is real. The question is, is it
acceptable? --Jim Houghton

"I'm writing from Belgium, being here for a year on exchange,
but i get the newsletter and it makes me so homesick for the
birkenstock volvo alternative-ness of ithaca, and the great initiatives
that come out of our town. One of these is the entirely youth-run
Orange Tree Theatre Company http://www.ottc.org which i think seems to
embody the spirit of youth empowerment and entrepreneurship.
Unfortunately, we cannot receive 501(c)3 status without an adult board
(we're all under 18). Do you think you could send out the call for
young adults or people interested in theater who would be willing to
serve on a board or act as mentors to us? We also need legal advice for
incorporation. --Anne Koplinka-Loehr Replies to Carter Lashley

"It was interesting to read of the vegan pit bull, but I want
to make a point that was not emphasized in the piece: putting your dog
or cat on a vegetarian or vegan diet is possible, but requires a lot of
commitment and knowledge. Unlike humans, who are esentially herbivores,
dogs and cats are carnivores, and have significantly different
nutritional needs than humans. Anyone who is considering a non-meat
diet for their pet needs to do the necessary research to make sure that
those nutritional needs are met, and not make the switch casually. It
sounds like Heidi Tremaine, a biologist and owner of the pit bull, did
that research.
