[This is the first of two messages monthly sent to 6,116 Ithaca area residents]
This 28th edition of Ithaca Community News celebrates distribution to over 6,000 Ithaca area residents.
Who is gathered around this campfire? We are anarchists and capitalists, Republicans and Greens, Democrats and Independents, deists and atheists, yuppies, hippies, slackers, mechanics and scholars, professionals and unemployed, too rich and too poor. We are the stylish and slobs, warriors and peacemakers, carnivores and vegetarians, abortion defenders and abortion haters, patriots hugging flags and patriots flying the Bill of Rights. We're from every spiritual lineage and ethnicity; we're listeners and shouters, dogmatic and undecided. Each of us is an original blend of these.
So in the spirit of getting to know one another-- of battling and collaborating toward better futures-- please send short notes/links about your community-related activities. Challenging times require freer discussion, more media, more action.
This newsletter is proud of its editorial preferences (for our environment, labor rights, civil rights & liberties, small/co-op enterprises, multiculturalism, nonviolence) and will not pretend that content is objective. Yet we'll print any flavor of message that clarifies conflicts, builds bridges, or both. Businesses and events charging fees are mentioned when Ithaca HOURS are accepted.

YOUR LETTERS
"Thanks for bringing the Taco Bell issue to the
forefront and providing the access to the kickoff speech. I saw the
demonstration the other day and got the leaflet from the demonstrators,
but it didn't give enough information. The web link you provided gave
me enough information to realize why the boycott is a good idea. My
kids and I sometimes ate (notice this shiney new past tense) at Taco
Bell, and I am going to share this item of news with them so they can
understand why we are taking our taco business to the ABC cafe (or even
better yet, our own freezer) instead!!" --Jane Marie

but I still think of it fondly. Your newsletter is posted on the
(Albany) Honest Weight Food Coop e-group, and it's brought back some
nice memories of living there (and working for a spell at Bolton's
Doughnut shop, doing deliveries and cleaning) while my GF attended
Cornell. I finally got back to visit Ithaca for a day early this
September for the first time in 16 years; after reading about the
demolition of the West Campus, it appears I wasn't a moment too
soon...anyway, keep up the good work." --Michael Cerkowski

---[FWD] "Dear Gary Stewart [Ithaca Journal
editorial page editor], Thank you for publishing something similar to
the letter I submitted.
---"After reading your editorial comments on the need for spell check,
it's clear that you consider proofreading very important. I can,
therefore, only conclude that all the typos that were ADDED to my
letter were put there on purpose. I cannot think of a legitimate
editorial need to riddle a letter with grammatical errors.
---"It is equally annoying that you find it necessary to add the
phrase, "in my opinion", "I believe", "as Isee it", etc next to every
phrase you don't happen to agree with. The page is titled, "OPINION"
and most people understand that this means that the various letters and
column are opinions. The only reason I can think of to add such phrases
to my letter was an attempt to dilute my comments with needless
clutter." --Joseph Wetmore

ORGANIC BURIAL GROUND to be voted on by the Newfield town
board:
---"An Organic Burial Ground uses all natural materials. Local crafts
people are being sought to create natural caskets of wood, wicker,
paper mache, as well as weavers for the weaving of shrouds. Sections
within the burial ground will be designated for the planting of native
trees, fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, perennials, wild flowers and
meadow. Flush-to-the-ground markers will be used to designate each
site."
---"This is in contrast to the pollution caused in the modern burial
from the use of embalming chemicals, dyes and heavy metals.
---"The site for this project is 30 acres of open farm land on the West
side of Burge Hill Road in Newfield, overlooking the hills of downtown
Ithaca.

YOUR LETTERS
"Thanks for bringing the Taco Bell issue to the forefront and
providing the access to the kickoff speech. I saw the demonstration the
other day and got the leaflet from the demonstrators, but it didn't
give enough information. The web link you provided gave me enough
information to realize why the boycott is a good idea. My kids and I
sometimes ate (notice this shiney new past tense) at Taco Bell, and I
am going to share this item of news with them so they can understand
why we are taking our taco business to the ABC cafe (or even better
yet, our own freezer) instead!!" --Jane Marie

NYS SOLAR PANEL REBATE: "We have a web site that describes a
practical working example of a grid-intertied residential solar
electric system in Van Etten. Our NYSERDA rebate amounted to
$5760.00 and we received a $3000.00 NYS tax rebate. What are the rest
of you waiting for? Do you want the oil companies to sell you the solar
panels? Go ahead, do the right thing." --Arthur

"It's been 23 years since I last lived in Ithaca, but I still
think of it fondly. Your newsletter is posted on the (Albany) Honest
Weight Food Coop e-group, and it's brought back some nice memories of
living there (and working for a spell at Bolton's Doughnut shop, doing
deliveries and cleaning) while my GF attended Cornell. I finally got
back to visit Ithaca for a day early this September for the first time
in 16 years; after reading about the demolition of the West Campus, it
appears I wasn't a moment too soon...anyway, keep up the good work."

---[FWD] "Dear Gary Stewart [Ithaca Journal editorial page
editor], Thank you for publishing something similar to the letter I
submitted.
The only reason I can think of to add such phrases
to my letter was an attempt to dilute my comments with needless
clutter." --Joseph Wetmore

rebuts, another letter-writer agrees with Wetmore, Casey Stevens tells
