YOUR LETTERS
"It seems to me there's a need to come to some
kind of agreement about a platform on which progressives could/should
run for Common Council & Mayor. What exactly can and should a
progressive actually DO if elected to Council? I'm not so much
interested in what that progressive SAYS - I think we need to explain
to voters what the progressive will DO.
---"There are clearly limits here. Council cannot move from regressive
taxation to progressive taxation, for example, because they are legally
constrained from doing so. They can lobby Albany to increase support
for local governments & schools, but since the state is facing
a $2.5B budget shortfall, they would have to pass a substantial
increase in the state income tax to rectify the situation. While
lobbying the state should certainly be a platform plank, it's not an
example of what the government can DO.
---"How can progressives deal with the ever-rising regressive property
tax? How can we counter the sprawl that will already be a fact by
January 2004? How can we continue providing needed city services
without layoffs or large tax increases while paying living wages
& insisting on using union labor?
---"I'd be very interested in hearing what the progressive Dem caucus
plans as well. Do they reflect the national party by proposing a
kinder, gentler version of the Cohen policies, or do they pose a clear
choice? What do Greens offer?" --Charles Dunaway

"People at this time of year try to answer the
question for themselves about whether to get a flu shot or not.
Weighing the risks/benefits is an individual choice but one fact that
individuals should be informed about in making the decision is the
exposure to mercury used as a preservative in vaccines. There has been
recent national attention on thimerosol, a mercury containing
preservative, that has been used in vaccines in the past but has now
been removed from vaccines given to children. The flu vaccine does
contain thimerosol....more information on this can be obtained at www.909shot.com
Maybe its time to put pressure on the vaccine companies to take the
mercury out of adult vaccines as well!" --Marilee Murphy
--------
"Thanks for the invaluable publicity, guys.
Question for Joe... are those extra (or even the first) printings being
done at liveable wage, union printers, or even on a downtown copier
machine??? I mean, if you want to keep merchants out of downtown events
who don't have a presence in the Partnership area, & boast the
need for a liveable wage, then I assume you can vouch for your beliefs
in the usage of the 'correct' printer, right??? And the profits can be
vouched for as an expense of your business, right??? Just checking on
possible conflicts, you see." --Casey Stevens, WHCU
---[REPLY] You have provided this editor with much free publicity, I'm
told, so this is merely fair. According to Wetmore, his book critiquing
Mayor Cohen is printed three doors away, at Mail Boxes Etc. There are
no union copy shops in our area. The book ($2.00) is sold near cost.

"A friend recently sent me your article on
GreenStar Globalisation, which I read with much interest, having been a
GreenStar/co-op shopper for many years. I wish to respond to one aspect
of the article, regarding Multinational
Ownership of [organic] products
---"Now, I agree that Kellogg's, Kraft, Nabisco, & General
Mills are bad (that's no news), Odwalla is owned by Coke, & I
commend anyone who seeks to inform the public of these issues.
Information is power, shopping is voting, no argument here. This is the
basis for many successful boycotting campaigns, & the key to
effective activism. BUT I think one must keep in mind that there are
different levels of Multinational Ownership, to some of which a
consumer boycott is simply irrelevant.
---"Here's a quote from your article detailing a chain of
repercussions: 'Hearty & Natural veggie burgers is owned by
Sunrich Food Group, which is owned by Stake Technologies, which is
owned principally by Gruber & McBain Capital Management, whose
principal investors are Boeing, Lockheed Martin & by
Polymedica, whose principal investor is Safeco, whose principal
investors are ExxonMobil, General Electric, & Citigroup.' Now,
do you really think boycotting veggie burgers will make a difference,
all the way down the line, to Exxon or GE or Citi? I think not!
---"Another example from your article: 'Celestial seasonings, Rice
Dream, Bearitos, Westbrae etc. owned by Hain Foods, whose
publicly-traded stock is owned by 'mutual funds & holding
companies like Wellington (whose) principal stockholders are Philip
Morris, etc.' This means that Hain Food Group, because Wellington Group
owns - according to NASDAQ - less than 1/3rd ($35 mil. worth) of its
shares out of a portfolio of $143 mil, of which some is owned by evil
corporations listed... should be boycotted?
---"My point is: consumers & boycotts are not what this is
about. Philip Morris, GE & co. are giant multinationals,
& they do what giant multinationals do: trade stock, millions
of $ at a time. They may be evil, but even in the unlikely event that
Sunrich or Hain Food Group were to go out of business because of some
massive boycott, what difference would it make to them? None
whatsoever.
---"Trading stocks on Wall Street is not something we can 'shop' out of
existence. More importantly, feeling guilty or depressed about your
favorite brand of chips, ricemilk, veggyburger or whatever helps no
one, when depriving yourself of it won't hurt the multinationals.
---"Thank you for an otherwise excellent article." --Sylvestre Marlaud
---[REPLY] Bearitos & other brands are little tails on
multinational monstrosities, yet sales profit & further empower
the world's most dangerous corporations. Expanding the control of
organic harvest, processing, marketing & distribution by such
companies as Monsanto endangers the definition & integrity of
organics, while marginalizing small local growers.
---We can't get rid of stock markets & private investment. The
only way to take control of capital is to invest it wisely &
spend it wisely. I've detailed how we can pool wealth to meet local
needs: Whole
Ithaca Stock Exchange (WISE)
---There are hundreds of independent organic brands which GreenStar
could stock alongside multinational brands, to give shoppers even
greater choice. The appeal is to better abundance, not guilt.

"The choice of who will provide your electricity
has turned out to be less of a choice than it initially appeared. Only
two companies are taking new residential customers at this time.
Furthermore, if the air emissions produced by the electricity you buy
are important to you, the choice is even further reduced. All the
energy supply companies except one buy their power from the same source
& so it consists of the same mix of mostly non-renewable energy
sources (less than 1% is from solar or wind).
---"There is one new choice with a difference. Co-opPlus Energy
Cooperative is a New York State incorporated cooperative that is now
accepting new residential customers. Co-opPlus members will still
receive their electricity through a third-party for now. By pooling our
members, Co-opPlus will be able to negotiate a slightly better rate
than an individual could alone. This may not make a big difference in
your energy costs initially. Our goal is to lay the groundwork for the
future when we will be large enough to buy energy ourselves directly
from renewable sources, provide members with energy efficiency services
& products, or be able to participate in the energy market in
other meaningful ways.
---"If you sign up with Co-opPlus, you will not notice anything
different in your bill. There is no risk, no additional fees, &
no commitment to staying with Co-opPlus. What you are doing by signing
up is helping to build the critical mass necessary to have real
purchasing power in the energy market.
---"Contrary to what many people think, the door to switching energy
providers does not close on January 1, 2003. You can switch at any
time. ---"If you want to sign up with Co-opPlus, fill out the member
application form send to Co-opPlus Energy Cooperative, Box
6637, Ithaca, NY 14851, or to [email protected].
You will receive an information packet from NYSEG Solutions, our
third-party energy provider. In it will be a letter from Co-OpPlus. It
is not until you send in the form in the NYSEG Solutions mailing that
you are committing to change energy providers.

"After almost four years of dealing with the City
of Ithaca, it looks like our house at 213 W. Spencer Street will be
demolished. Of course we still do not have anything in writing (like
what the city will pay for our property or when we have to be out) but
we were recently told that our house is "a dime a dozen" & we
will find another. Plus the construction schedule we were provided with
begins in April.
---"Our house is not a dime a dozen and is worthy of being saved. It is
a beautiful old home w/ wonderful woodwork & it is in excellent
condition. However, it seems the city thinks in the short term (maybe
three months at the longest stretch) & it is more convenient to
tear the house down. But in the process of kicking people out of their
homes for a bigger road, it also takes homes off the tax rolls
& leaves a hole in the neighborhood.
---"If anything, I hope city officials can learn to be sympathetic when
serving the 30+ people with eviction notices this spring. Regardless of
what they think of our homes, they are (or where) our homes.
---I think our next home will be a car.... it will be safer that way."
--Lauri Dahl
--------
"Your readers are encouraged to submit names for
naming our city bridges for someone who they might think has
contributed to the city's past. They can do that by contacting the
Superintendant of Public Works in City Hall."
--Gossa Tsegaye, Commissioner of Board of Public Works.
---[REPLY] The new Plain St bridge, built over the objections of the
neighborhood, should be named for Alan Cohen, who shoved it down their
throats. Daily rush hour traffic on Rte 13 should be named the Thys
VanCort Traffic Jam, for the Director of Planning (1974-present), who
has planned only for expanded traffic. Wider roadways & bridge
capacity merely bring more cars. We need alternatives.
--------
"I have to say [Gwendolyn Dean's] letter
[attacking Prof. Venables] is very disturbing. For someone to be
unaware of Venables' contributions & feel this is grounds to
question the way he is characterized is preposterous. For those who
don't know how Venables has contributed to the American Indian cause,
look at almost any Indian land reclamation case & you will find
him mentioned as the man who researched pertaining treaties &
presented this information in court.
---"Robert Venables has fought, without looking for personal gain, to
rectify the ills of those who couldn't or were limited in their ability
to fight for themselves. This alone justifies his characterization as
progressive & radical, without talking about the thousands of
Cornell students he enlightened by teaching the American Indian Studies
class. I learned from Venables as much about the human condition
& the wielding of power in politics as I did about the history
of the American Indian. Lastly, regarding the statement referring to
contracts, being forced out three years earlier than your contract
states is 'giving the boot' to someone. At least, it is on this
planet." --Glen

YOUR LETTERS
"It seems to me there's a need to come to some kind of
agreement about a platform on which progressives could/should run for
Common Council & Mayor.

"People at this time of year try to answer the question for
themselves about whether to get a flu shot or not. Weighing the
risks/benefits is an individual choice but one fact that individuals
should be informed about in making the decision is the exposure to
mercury used as a preservative in vaccines. There has been recent
national attention on thimerosol, a mercury containing preservative,
that has been used in vaccines in the past but has now been removed
from vaccines given to children. The flu vaccine does contain
thimerosol....more information on this can be obtained at www.909shot.com
Maybe its time to put pressure on the vaccine companies to take the
mercury out of adult vaccines as well!" --Marilee Murphy
--------
"Thanks for the invaluable publicity, guys. Question for
Joe... are those extra (or even the first) printings being done at
liveable wage, union printers, or even on a downtown copier machine???
I mean, if you want to keep merchants out of downtown events who don't
have a presence in the Partnership area, & boast the need for a
liveable wage, then I assume you can vouch for your beliefs in the
usage of the 'correct' printer, right??? And the profits can be vouched
for as an expense of your business, right??? Just checking on possible
conflicts, you see." --Casey Stevens, WHCU
---[REPLY] You have provided this editor with much free publicity, I'm
told, so this is merely fair. According to Wetmore, his book critiquing
Mayor Cohen is printed three doors away, at Mail Boxes Etc. There are
no union copy shops in our area. The book ($2.00) is sold near cost.

"A friend recently sent me your article on GreenStar
Globalisation, which I read with much interest, having been a
GreenStar/co-op shopper for many years.

"The choice of who will provide your electricity has turned
out to be less of a choice than it initially appeared. Only two
companies are taking new residential customers at this time.

"After almost four years of dealing with the City of Ithaca,
it looks like our house at 213 W. Spencer Street will be demolished. Of
course we still do not have anything in writing (like what the city
will pay for our property or when we have to be out) but we were
recently told that our house is "a dime a dozen" & we will find
another. Plus the construction schedule we were provided with begins in
April.

"Your readers are encouraged to submit names for naming our
city bridges for someone who they might think has contributed to the
city's past. They can do that by contacting the Superintendant of
Public Works in City Hall."
--------
"I have to say [Gwendolyn Dean's] letter [attacking Prof.
Venables] is very disturbing. For someone to be unaware of Venables'
contributions & feel this is grounds to question the way he is
characterized is preposterous. For those who don't know how Venables
has contributed to the American Indian cause, look at almost any Indian
land reclamation case & you will find him mentioned as the man
who researched pertaining treaties & presented this information
in court.
