EDITORIAL: ITHACA FRENCHFEST
* Thomas Cramer (Ithaca Journal 4/11) & I agree that Saddam's Iraq was fascist, that fascism must be confronted, & that the French government has done bad things. The Ithaca FrenchFest (4/30) specifically celebrates France's leadership to prevent the United States' invasion of Iraq, condemned by most of the world's population, particularly those beyond reach of United States media.
---There is growing concern that United States itself, as sponsor & weaponsmaker for dozens of dictatorships during the past 50 years (including conventional arms sales to Iraq 1982-1990 & chemical weapons sales & as the enemy of many elected governments & popular rebellions (Guatemala '54, Dominican Republic '65, Chile '73, etc), has become fascistic.
---When a society militarizes for regional/global domination newamericancentury.org then "preventively" invades other nations, when it centralizes warmaking authority in a supreme leader (Bush '02), when it subordinates civil liberties & dissent to national security (Patriot Act '01), when it imprisons (2) millions of its citizens, when it manipulates elections (Bush '00), when its Propaganda Ministry (ABC, NBC, CBS, etc) uses fear & patriotism to promote acceptance of the above, fascism has arrived.
---How to do we reverse fascism?
Set an example of an open democracy with honest multiparty elections & free media which does not need an empire to provide abundance to all, where all workers & disabled may live well; Rip out fascism's roots: chronic unemployment & job insecurity, enormous income divides, social desperation, jingoism & racism; Do not sell fascists weapons; Celebrate dissent; Honor United Nations deliberations & the voices of the Third World.
---Love of democracy demands daily activism, not reflex flag-waving. As U.S. General & Senator Carl Schurz said, "My country, right or wrong. When right to be kept right; when wrong to be put right." That's the kind of support that freedom-loving troops deserve.

YOUR LETTERS

"I'm inquiring about the Ithaca Trolley. I was wondering if you rent that out for an evening & how much it would cost if it is available. I am throwing a large party for the senior theatre majors of Ithaca College." --M. Curran
---[REPLY] The trolley article describes the potential economic & environmental benefits of re-installing a fixed rail trolley in Ithaca. Hasn't happened yet. The Ithaca Downtown Partnership is looking at the plan now. Check back in a few years!
--------

"Just got my first Ithaca Community Newsletter through the Camel Breeders Group at Cornell. Please sign me up-- this newsletter is a superb resource!" --Oliver
--------

"After WWII, the USA was key player in the War Crimes Tribunal-- trial of high ranking Nazi Officials. In the 7,000 pages of the Tribunal report there was language about 'holding a population (Germans) responsible for the acts of their government.' I have always believed that it was a huge evolutionary step in One World Peace politics/law. I agree with the Judgement. I believe that if we had the audacity to create such a law that we bloody well better adhere to it!
---"The German people faced almost certain death to resist their government. My question is, what are WE to do? If we believe citizens are responsible for the acts of their government, & our government clearly is ignoring our wishes, what are we to do? Revolution? Thomas Jefferson expected revolution every 20 years to keep the Republic viable." --Rere Hassett
---[REPLY] Nuremberg Principles

"I think the FrenchFest is fantastic. It is a great way for people to enjoy life & be political at the same time-- one of the things I think is most difficult for people to do. It's most important & effective in making a statement... to continue on with life, doing things you like to do." --Jocelyn Cassaniti
---- "The FrenchFest should have a section set aside for French kissing! Far more pleasant than the bu$h regime's violence, death, & destruction. Perhaps set up a couch that amorous couples could use to display some public love & affection." --Henry Hansteen
---- "A votre bon sante. Vous avez un tres bon idee pour un celebration francais!" --Katie
---- "Are You still looking for ballet performers? And how about a lingerie fashion show? (modelled by men?)" --Ilonka
---- "Finally! Someone sticking up for France! I hope it gets tons of press!" --Pat
--------

"We are writing regarding the GreenStar Council elections. Sure there are 7 candidates for 7 seats, but write-in votes are accepted. Why just throw the bone to the group on the ballot when we could write-in someone who can actually make a difference on a council that has proven themselves ineffective over the past year. We're recommending Art Godin. He says that he would accept a seat on Council if elected as a write-in. He has tons of relevant experience, a previous staffer & worker, & being on the ground floor of the member labor system. He's articulate & organized. He has a sensible view about Council & the importance of guiding through goals & broad policies. He's strong enough to stand up to unproductive dynamics, but centered enough to deal w/ them compassionately. We think he would be a great asset to Council.
---"Remember folks if you've already voted & now wish you'd voted differently, perhaps because you've actually read the statements by candidates instead of being lead by poor advice. You can submit a second ballot & have it count as long as the outside envelope, where you write your membership number, clearly indicates that it's the second ballot. Let's exhibit some responsible voting here-- read the statements, listen to all council hopefuls tabling at the store, & vote with our own minds & not on the advice & assurances of others." --Tim & Amy
---[REPLY] The top 5 vote-getters gain 3-yr terms; next gets 2-yr term; last gets 1-yr term. Others who have indicated a willingness to accept write-in votes are Pete Meyers & Kathryn Cernera. Ithaca Community News endorses CARINI, CONNER, SALON, SHPACK, STERN, VANTHILT + MEYERS.
--------

"A quick suggestion. We're new in town & would like to support the usage of Ithaca HOURs, but are not familiar with many local businesses by name. However, if there were a list of businesses separated into categories by types of services offered, we could look for the types of services we need & choose to patronize those businesses who accept HOURs. Just a thought!" --Diana Griffin
---[REPLY] Copies of the HOUR Town annual directory are available at Autumn Leaves Used Books, Alternatives Federal Credit Union, GreenStar, Viva Taqueria & other places. The HOUR board seeks to get the full list on the web. See also listings at ithacanews.org/classifieds.html
--------

"I am a resident of Bath hoping to move to Ithaca in the near future. My wife was told that you put out an e-newsletter containing progressive political issues & we are very interested in subscribing." --Mike Ellis
--------

"I had a dream the other night. Maybe you had one like it too. It was based on one of those mind-numbing commercials for credit cards. That guy with the syrupy TV voice did the voiceover, & it went like this:
---"Cost to the U.S. taxpayer of one Caterpillar D-9 Bulldozer, such as the one used by the Israeli army to run over & kill Palestinians (& their supporters) who are simply defending their homes in the West Bank & the Gaza Strip: $1,000,000.
---"Cost to the U.S. taxpayer of one Armored Personnel Carrier, used to transport U.S. troops invading & occupying Iraq: $2,000,000;
---"Cost to humanity - due to the American empire's insatiable lust for profit, control, & hegemony - of all the brilliant, creative, fulfilling years of life lost by children, women, & men harmed or murdered in Iraq, in Columbia, in Palestine, in Syria, in North Korea, on Vieques, in the Robert Taylor Homes, in Bedford Stuy, in East Los Angeles, in Appalachia: Priceless.
---"With dreams like this, who needs nightmares? I don't. So my conscience is leading me to tell you that I can no longer support the U.S. government's criminal policies & actions with my tax dollars. It just doesn't make sense to me anymore. I am redirecting the taxes that I owe to groups that are stuggling to create a better world for all people." --David Meyers, Ex-Taxpayer
--------

[To Maurice Hinchey] "You wax quite eloquent when speaking against the war; giving a well thought-out picture, & including important details as to why you are against it. Your political actions regarding the war, however, trivialize & undercut your oratory, making your speechifying just another deceptive distraction, rather than any sort of asset to the peace movement.
---"You maintain that you had to vote for the previous pro war resolution because it included a symbolic 'support our troops' clause & the rest was essentially impotent.
---"Yet when your so-called anti-war resolve was tested with HR 1559, an $80 billion dollar supplemental appropriations to fund Bush's Attack on Iraq, you voted in favor of the bill, & the war & against both your conscience & your pro-peace speechifying.
---"Voting in favor of HR 1559 was not a trivial symbolic action. If you & your fellow Congress members refuse to pay for the war, the president will be powerless to wage it.
---"How can we trust that you are against the war when every vote after BushØùs invasion indicates that you support it in every way possible? How can we trust that what you say, or any stand you take, will ever be anything other than a trivial symbolic act? When will your actions match your words?" --Joseph Wetmore PS. There were members of Congress who did not vote for the war.
--------

"I'm a fan of your newsletter & someone who is very pleased to see people taking to the streets to express their passionate positions on issues of importance. I myself went to a rally in Washington in January. I was fortunate enough to spend a little time taking in the protest near the Catholic church.
---"That said, I can not claim to be an activist. I am, however, a concerned citizen doing my best to soak up alternative viewpoints as much as I can. I've voted Green in the past two presidential elections because I heard a strong message that seemed well grounded in truth & justice.
---"Yet, I am sometimes confused by polar, unbalanced debate & aggressive 'we vs. them' activism. George Bush is evil, 'we' are good. The Ithaca Journal & NPR are tools of corporate propaganda, whereas 'we' generate the unbiased truth. Cars are bad, bikes are good (I like this one, tho -- being an avid cyclist).
---"But the truth is, radical activists rarely speak for the interests of the many. The idea that any one group knows what is best for the rest of us seems counterintuitive to me. An effective response to current events may take far more than protest & civil disobedience. It may take open discussion of ideas. We may want to include many voices & not simply cloak equally unbalanced reporting under the label of 'independent media.' It may require that we REALLY listen to those brothers & sisters who are eager to send our troops to war. It may involve an honest desire to understand how anyone would want to compromise the health of the earth. We may need to reach out to those who don't share our values, to determine what their fears are. What their dreams are. And we must do so with the same spirit of peace & caring that we say we are so strongly in favor of.
---"Name calling & demonizing serve only to create a greater divide among people. As peace advocates we should inspect the evidence, but by all means let honest 'inspections' work." --Dan Jenkins
---[REPLY] You're right that we need to be listening closely to those with whom we most disagree. The Journal & NPR are owned or funded by some of the world's most damaging corporations, but pretend no corporate bias. ICN is biased for peace, & gratefully accepts reader donations: ICN, Box 365, Ithaca 14851.
--------

"What is the website at Cornell for people offering/seeking rides out of town & back?" --Scott Marsland
---[REPLY] cuinfo.cornell.edu/Student/RideBoard
--------

"Here are some constructive ideas for Senator Schumer:
---"Instead of spending hundreds of billions of dollars on war why not spend hundreds of billions of dollars on more education so the average person on the street really understands history & other cultures?
---"We could have student exchange programs built into the public school program where we send our kids to other countries & they send kids here.
---"Right now we do it but it's on a tiny scale. We need everyone in society to have these experiences.
---"If we do this on a big scale (like nearly everyone) it would really alter the way nations interact after a generation. All our government officials will have grown up w/deep knowledge of different cultures. Would George Bush want to invade & bomb Iraq if he had spent a year in Baghdad when he was 16? I don't think so.
---"The Nazi generals didn't want to raze Paris because many of them had fond memories of spending time there in their youth. National Security means more than arming ourselved to the teeth. It's a long process of education & building understanding between peoples that we'd better start now or we're not going to survive as a race on this planet." --Herb Susmann [email protected]
--------

"Are you kidding? Not everyone is anti-war." --R.T.
--------

"Thanks for sending me the newsletter. Keep up the good work!" --Stephen Keast
-------- "Please remove this address from the mailing list for this seditious content." --anonymous
---[REPLY] The charge of sedition ("incitement of discontent or rebellion against a government") is itself a sedition against the Bill of Rights, which expects the public to correct the government.

Curran

However, if there were a list of businesses separated into categories by types of services offered, we could look for the types of services we need & choose to patronize those businesses who accept HOURs. Just a thought!" --Diana Griffin

---"Cost to the U.S. taxpayer of one Armored Personnel Carrier, used to transport U.S. troops invading & occupying Iraq: $2,000,000;
