AMAZING ITHACA HISTORY
* June 20, 1929: Forty-foot ketch Carlsark sails
from the Inlet to the Erie Canal, then to the St. Lawrence River
& across the Atlantic to ITHAKA, GREECE.
* June 21, 1887: MONSTER STRAWBERRY grown by Sam Swartout.
* June 22, 1905: After heavy rainstorm entire city is thrown into wild
stampeding PANIC when rumore spreads that the new 30' dam in Six Mile
Creek burst. "The water is coming! Run for your lives!"
* June 23, 1886: A specimen of wheat, the straw of which 5' 4", picked
on farm of F.H. Tarbell. 78% of the land area of Tompkins County was
then in active farms.
* June 24, 1672: Father Carbeil, a missionary among the Cayugas, writes
a letter describing the BEAUTY of this area, of the great quantities of
fish in the lake & of the immense clouds of ducks, geese
& swan.

YOUR LETTERS
"I have a weird request for you. I wonder if you
could help me figure out a formula for adding unpaid caregiving to the
GDP. I'm not quite sure how the GDP even works, but I know that at this
point in time only paid work counts. Currently, about 2/3 of the wealth
in the economy is produced by human capital, so obviously caregiving is
important in a real economic sense.
---"I'm just starting to think about this, but if you would be willing
to help me learn more about how the economy works I would be very
grateful." --Elizabeth B.
---[REPLY] Check out the Mothers
& More campaign, which has done this:
--------
"Please add me to the list. I will be starting as
an internal medicine physician (hospital only) at Cayuga Medical Center
this coming August. My wife & I are moving here from Minnesota.
She'll work at Cornell doing a post-doc in tropical agriculture. We
were excited to find such a great resource as your newsletter."
--Jonathan Kirsch
--------
"Regarding the letter about SARS and goods shipped
from China, I doubt SARS is the problem with those goods. However,
because the Asian longhorned beetle poses a threat to US forests,
container ships from China & Hong Kong at West Coast ports are
fumigated with methyl bromide, which destroys the ozone layer &
was supposed to have been banned a few years ago. Another problem with
importing goods by ship, regardless of whether its from China, France
or Brazil, is that freighters burn dirty oil that you couldn't legally
burn in a motor vehicle, which is one reason port cities have such bad
air." --Eric Spiegler, Interlaken, NY
--------
"Just about the only negative aspect of your
running for President that I can see is that you will have less time to
devote to all of your local projects. It really is a great opportunity
to get some meaningful discussion underway. Good luck." --Marty Luster
---[REPLY] Thanks, encouragement from a many-seasoned politician is
valued. The aim of this candidacy is indeed merely to raise some issues
during the next few months. And my campaign budget is too small to
allow me to leave Ithaca.

"I'd like to let you know that there is at least one lone soul out here

"As a little bit of follow-up to the news a while
ago of far-right Free Republic's anti-Ithaca site, I made an account on
their forum (after reading their statement which says that they respect
free speech). They have a rule against posting racist items, yet one
poster wrote that American dead are far more "valuable" than Iraqi
dead. I gave a very reasoned response, saying that this was an awful
argument to make even in simply trying to promote the conservative
cause; it makes them look like hypocrites insulting the Iraqi people
while saying that they were working in the interest of the Iraqi
people. Anyway, they deleted my posts & my posting account
right away, instead of giving any reasoned response." --Ben Regenspan
---[REPLY] Good try. They're devoted to bashing free expression, in the
name of Americanism.

"As you may know, TCAT is raising bus
fares effective 8/21/ 03. They are now wishing to cut bus routes
starting July. We can't have this. I myself don't make enough money to
own a car, much less support one & pay the basic necessities of
life.
---"Many countless others are just like me or can't drive because of
age etc. No one I know including myself can afford a cab, so, if they
take our buses away that we so desperately need, how will we be
independent & take care of ourselves without relying on others
to get us where we need to go all the time?
---"Whether you ride a bus, know people who do, or don't care either
way cause it doesn't effect you, think again. Taxes will be raised to
accommodate those of us who will have to rely on DSS & other
agencies to pay for cabs, Gadabout, etc. to get us to places that used
to be on routes that will be canceled.

"Hi, thanks for keeping news about the Cayuga Lake
Group [seeking jetski controls] active in your newsletter. A lot of
people choose not to join the group by going through Yahoo since they
are concerned about spam. A way for them to join up for group emails
without having to get a yahoo ID & password is for them to
email [email protected]
& ask to be added. People can also email to request a petition
to regulate the speed of jetskis close to shore. So far 500+ people
have signed this petition." --Quietclean

"Your [Whole Ithaca
Stock Exchange] is a great idea! Some of these ideas are
things we've been kicking around here in Schuyler County; we have a
sustainability discussion group here & your sustainability
index is exactly the kind of metric we've been discussing. We're
currently looking into opportunities for a local farm & craft
market, something flexible enough to welcome occassional vendors and
craftspeople, but with enough continuity to provide a consistently
abundant local shopping opportunity. Keep thinking & producing
these great ideas!" --Jylle Benson-Gauss
--------
"I would like to suggest a local consumer boycott
of Hollywood Video in Ithaca. I have rented two videos from the
Hollywood store on Route 13 recently (Y Tu Mama Tambien & Sex
and Lucia) only to be informed by the clerks there that they have been
censored to remove content deemed objectionable by Hollywood Video's
upper level management. In a town such as ours, where First Amendment
Rights are so highly valued, it would seem a matter of course that such
corporate censorship would be unacceptable to a majority of Ithacans.
Additionally, it seems more than a little hypocritical for Hollywood to
censor movies over sexual content while eagerly renting out uncensored
films about cannibals who hack women up & eat them. It's a
shame that we've lost our local independent video stores & are
being left with these corporate entities who will tell us what we can
& cannot see." --Glen Robertson [email protected]
--------
"I'm building a web site that chronicles the
reasons to dump Bush in 2004. If you think your readers might be
interested, they can find it at thousandreasons.org
--Phil Tate, Freeville
--------
"May I suggest a foreign policy platform [for your
Presidency]? If elected you should push to invade one small country
every month. Start with Andorra because its porous borders could be
breached by terrorists. Then Monaco because they have so much money
somebody there must be funding terrorism. Next San Marino because it is
on top of a hill in Italy which could provide a good view for
terrorists. Other candidates: Sao Tome and Principe (near oil fields),
Aruba (reasonably close to Cuba) & Tuvalu (might as well)."
--David W.
--------
"Just wondering if you might add my brother to
your list. Thanks! you kick ass!" --Emily
---[REPLY] Ithaca kicks ass. Ithaca Community News merely follows
'behind.'
--------
"Check out the beautiful, experimental design,
triangular Japanese
teahouse on the south side of the Johnson Museum. Over 2000
hours of labor went into the teahouse, including the collection of
plant materials from which all the walls were woven, the construction
of the cedar deck, & the design of the entry path. Made of
natural materials & open to the weather, the structure may
eventually degrade, but is in its glory right now!" --Karen Edelstein
--------
"I am glad that [Hanan Zaman] has enjoyed the use
of Pegasys studios; it is important that members of our community have
access to the media in order to counter the increasing centralization
of media control. With the passage of the 1996 federal
Telecommunications Act, & now with the latest FCC ruling, our
access to the media is increasingly limited. The writer is correct in
pointing out that under the new franchise agreement, some changes will
take place. Unfortunately, there are some inaccuracies in the letter
that I would like to correct.
---"First, there is no vote on July 7th. Common Council already voted
to approve the franchise agreement w/ Time Warner Cable, &
there will be no more votes on this matter by the City. The only thing
that needs to happen is for the NYS Public Service Commission to
approve the franchise agreement. I do not know when this is scheduled
to take place, but perhaps that is the July 7th date that the writer
mentions.
---"Second, the studios will still be available, but residents who live
in municipalities that contribute to the operation of the studio will
be given priority & will be allowed to use the studio free of
charge. Residents of other municipalities will likely have to pay to
use the studio. Anyone will still be able to bring a tape to Pegasys
and have it aired on Channel 13 for no charge.
---"Each of the 3 contributing municipalities are paying 0.5% of the
franchise fee that they earn from Time Warner, money that up to now
they did not have to pay. Please urge your elected officials at the
Town & Village level to make an equal contribution. The more
municipalities that contribute, the higher the level of service
& the longer Pegasys studios will be open each day.
---"Finally, I ask residents of the City of Ithaca who would be
interested in serving on the Access Oversight Committee (AOC) to please
contact me. The AOC will be responsible for setting the rules governing
the use of Pegasys Studio, such as hours of operation, & cost
to use the studio. It will include members from each of the
participating municipalities." --Dan Cogan, Common Council, Ward 5 [email protected]

Thanks to LIGHTLINK for reliable internet services:
HOMER SMITH'S WAR ON SPAM:
---"The present [Lightlink] spam trap depends on Subject lines: it does
a 'fuzzy' match between the subject lines of incoming mail & a
database of known spam subject lines. If there is a match, it marks the
mail as spam.
---"The spammers however are getting wise to this & are sending
nonsense subject lines, which the system can not tell are nonsense, but
since every spam has a different line, none match the database,
& so it gets through anyhow. Within a a few months the present
spam trap system will be totally useless.
---"The present system also generates too many false positives, as the
spammers know exactly how to form a readable subject line that looks
like that order you just received!
---"We are moving towards a much more complex anti spam system based on
products like Spam Assassin & mathematical algorithms that
match word patterns through out the e-mail. Basic problem with all of
these is they are VERY SLOW & CPU intensive, although their hit
rate is supposed to be very good & false positives very low.
---"Even before we implement them though, the spammers are already
sending spam w/ random garbage in the body of the e-mail to stump the
scanning process. I mean someone would really have to WANT a bigger you
know what to read through the scramble just to get to the details!"

AMAZING ITHACA HISTORY
* June 20, 1929: Forty-foot ketch Carlsark sails from the
Inlet to the Erie Canal, then to the St. Lawrence River &
across the Atlantic to ITHAKA, GREECE.

I wonder if you could help
me figure out a formula for adding unpaid caregiving to the GDP. I'm
not quite sure how the GDP even works, but I know that at this point in
time only paid work counts. Currently, about 2/3 of the wealth in the
economy is produced by human capital, so obviously caregiving is
important in a real economic sense.
---"I'm just starting to think about this, but if you would be willing
to help me learn more about how the economy works I would be very
grateful." --Elizabeth B.
---[REPLY] Check out the Mothers
& More campaign, which has done this:

"Please add me to the list. I will be starting as an internal
medicine physician (hospital only) at Cayuga Medical Center this coming
August. My wife & I are moving here from Minnesota. She'll work
at Cornell doing a post-doc in tropical agriculture. We were excited to
find such a great resource as your newsletter." --Jonathan Kirsch
--------
"Regarding the letter about SARS and goods shipped from
China, I doubt SARS is the problem with those goods. However, because
the Asian longhorned beetle poses a threat to US forests, container
ships from China & Hong Kong at West Coast ports are fumigated
with methyl bromide, which destroys the ozone layer & was
supposed to have been banned a few years ago. Another problem with
importing goods by ship, regardless of whether its from China, France
or Brazil, is that freighters burn dirty oil that you couldn't legally
burn in a motor vehicle, which is one reason port cities have such bad
air." --Eric Spiegler, Interlaken, NY
--------
"Just about the only negative aspect of your running for
President that I can see is that you will have less time to devote to
all of your local projects. It really is a great opportunity to get
some meaningful discussion underway. Good luck." --Marty Luster
---[REPLY] Thanks, encouragement from a many-seasoned politician is
valued. The aim of this candidacy is indeed merely to raise some issues
during the next few months. And my campaign budget is too small to
allow me to leave Ithaca.

"As a little bit of follow-up to the news a while ago of
far-right Free Republic's anti-Ithaca site, I made an account on their
forum (after reading their statement which says that they respect free
speech). They have a rule against posting racist items, yet one poster
wrote that American dead are far more "valuable" than Iraqi dead. I
gave a very reasoned response, saying that this was an awful argument
to make even in simply trying to promote the conservative cause; it
makes them look like hypocrites insulting the Iraqi people while saying
that they were working in the interest of the Iraqi people. Anyway,
they deleted my posts & my posting account right away, instead
of giving any reasoned response." --Ben Regenspan
---[REPLY] Good try. They're devoted to bashing free expression, in the
name of Americanism.

"As you may know, TCAT
is raising bus fares effective 8/21/ 03. They are now wishing to cut
bus routes starting July. We can't have this. I myself don't make
enough money to own a car, much less support one & pay the
basic necessities of life.

Mengel at TCAT to express how you feel." --Sunshine Bannister

"Hi, thanks for keeping news about the Cayuga Lake Group
[seeking jetski controls] active in your newsletter. A lot of people
choose not to join the group by going through Yahoo since they are
concerned about spam. A way for them to join up for group emails
without having to get a yahoo ID & password is for them to
email [email protected]
& ask to be added. People can also email to request a petition
to regulate the speed of jetskis close to shore. So far 500+ people
have signed this petition." --Quietclean

"Your [Whole
Ithaca Stock Exchange] is a great idea! Some of these ideas
are things we've been kicking around here in Schuyler County; we have a
sustainability discussion group here & your sustainability
index is exactly the kind of metric we've been discussing. We're
currently looking into opportunities for a local farm & craft
market, something flexible enough to welcome occassional vendors and
craftspeople, but with enough continuity to provide a consistently
abundant local shopping opportunity. Keep thinking & producing
these great ideas!" --Jylle Benson-Gauss

"I would like to suggest a local consumer boycott of
Hollywood Video in Ithaca. I have rented two videos from the Hollywood
store on Route 13 recently (Y Tu Mama Tambien & Sex and Lucia)
only to be informed by the clerks there that they have been censored to
remove content deemed objectionable by Hollywood Video's upper level
management. In a town such as ours, where First Amendment Rights are so
highly valued, it would seem a matter of course that such corporate
censorship would be unacceptable to a majority of Ithacans.

"May I suggest a foreign policy platform [for your
Presidency]? If elected you should push to invade one small country
every month. Start with Andorra because its porous borders could be
breached by terrorists. Then Monaco because they have so much money
somebody there must be funding terrorism. Next San Marino because it is
on top of a hill in Italy which could provide a good view for
terrorists. Other candidates: Sao Tome and Principe (near oil fields),
Aruba (reasonably close to Cuba) & Tuvalu (might as well)."

"Check out the beautiful, experimental design, triangular Japanese teahouse on the
south side of the Johnson Museum. Over 2000 hours of labor
went into the teahouse, including the collection of plant materials
from which all the walls were woven, the construction of the cedar
deck, & the design of the entry path. Made of natural materials
& open to the weather, the structure may eventually degrade,
but is in its glory right now!" --Karen Edelstein

"I am glad that [Hanan Zaman] has enjoyed the use of Pegasys
studios; it is important that members of our community have access to
the media in order to counter the increasing centralization of media
control. With the passage of the 1996 federal Telecommunications Act,
& now with the latest FCC ruling, our access to the media is
increasingly limited. The writer is correct in pointing out that under
the new franchise agreement, some changes will take place.
Unfortunately, there are some inaccuracies in the letter that I would
like to correct.
