FRIEND OF LABOR AWARD 9/1/03 to TIM
JOSEPH:
excerpts from statement by Carl Feuer: "Possibly no one else has been
as perceptive & eloquent and prolific as ascribe of letters
& opinion pieces on the themes of economic & social
justice in the Journal & elsewhere during this time. But he has
been more than a writer. Much more.
---"From the inception of the living wage movement here in Ithaca he
was an active & effective participant. In 1997 he played a
critical role in winning passage of ground-breaking legislation which
ensured that all human service workers then laboring under County
contracts would be paid a living wage - & over 20 workers did
receive raises. Most important, in my opinion, he did this not only as
a member of the County Legislature but also & primarily as an
unabashed member & activist with the Living Wage Coalition. Too
many of our friends are elected to office & then forget their
organizational roots in the movement for egalitarianism and fairness.
He didn't.
---"In 2002 when over 500 of us and 50 organizations holding their
banners high marched through the streets of Ithaca demanding a living
wage for our hardworking school paraprofessionals he was there leading
the delegation of local legislators.
---"And this year, again, when we moved to seek passage of a County
living wage resolution, he was there, and drafted the resolution that
was eventually passed."

YOUR LETTERS
"I've just moved to Ithaca from the NY
metro area
& would appreciate receiving your newsletter. It is required
reading for anyone interested in what is going on in town." --Barbara
Wagner
---- "Hello! I have recently moved out of state but I want to keep
informed of things going on in Ithaca. Can you please add my name
again? Thanks so much!" --Anne-Marie
--------
"I'd like to pay my son's allowance in
HOURS, but
I don't know how to start. Can you help?" --Judy Swann
---[REPLY] You can buy HOURS from GreenStar & accepting HOURS
as change, which helps circulate them. Your son can spend them w/
anybody in the HOUR Town directory, or listed at ithacanews.org/classifieds.html
--or anyone else willing to accept them.
--------
"Please do add me to your listserv. I am
an
activist now doing human rights work in Guatemala. At the end of this
year I will be back in the U.S. & am very interested in the
Ithaca area." --Tony Banout
--------
"On 8/30 the Ithaca Journal ran a long
article
which showed just how serious a problem the lack of affordable housing
is in this county. The article had data showing that the % of people
paying more than 35% of their income for housing averaged 42.8%,
ranging from 51.6% in the City of Ithaca (distorted by students) to
22.3% in Groton. Danby & Enfield were both over 40%. If the
Journal had used HUD's 30% of income as the index point, then the
numbers lacking affordable housing would have been greater still!
---"Anybody have any ideas how we can organize to lower rents?" --Carl
Feuer
---[REPLY] Whenever the City gets its hands on properties these should
be removed from the speculative market by conversion to limited-equity
co-housing for low-income residents. Disincentives should be imposed on
absentee landlords. Superinsulation tax credits (particularly for
glazing) should be provided to landlords who cut fuel bills &
pass savings to renters. Mutual aid systems & buying clubs for
food, fuel & health care will likewise cut the cost of living
& build the equity for ownership.
--------
"Chuck Nocera (of the Tompkins County Red
Cross)
& I have floated the idea for years of local governments
offering tax incentives to landlords who provide affordable housing or
rent to identified groups of people, which could include low income
people. But in this climate of federal & state budget squeezes,
that's really unlikely.
---"Another idea is that any housing development that uses public
funding (CDBG, tax abatements, etc) should include some housing units
that are required to remain at an affordable level for X number of
years. I think we need to recognize the reality of housing in this
market.
---"Energy costs & property taxes are high, & students
are using dorm prices as a standard, & are willing &
able to pay much more than working families can afford. Limited housing
options mean that working people will live further away from their
jobs, & have the additional expenses of maintaining &
insuring cars, paying for gas, etc. Obviously, we need higher wages
& better mass transportation as well as more affordable
housing." --Deirdre Silverman [email protected]
--------
"I know you are interesting in cycling
&
thought you might like this site: Cyclists in Love" cyclists.perfect-match.co.uk/register.php

more nations & cities to your menu. NYS bike maps: dot.state.ny.us/pubtrans/bphome.html
--------
"Have you noticed that 'Ithaca is Gorges'
T-shirts
are suddenly trendy attire for college students? They're everywhere!
(Plus I saw one in Portland OR this summer. ) I'm wondering whether you
or your News readers could shed any light on why the familiar design
has caught on this particular year. Were they given away at
orientation? Has there been a marketing blitz? Are they available in
new locations convenient to students? I'm tickled at seeing so many
students proclaim their admiration for their temporary home, rather
than just complaining about the cold winters. While we're on the
subject, do you know who created the original design, & when?"
--Robinne
---[REPLY] Howard Cogan, local radio ad crafter, wrote the slogan.
There's recently been more of an effort to orient new college students
to their new home. Hopefully that will bring them downtown.
--------
"Can we, here in Washington, REALLY join Ithaca Health Fund?
How do we approach physicians w/ this plan, if they're not already
informed? Must they be members? I've read almost your entire site
& it sounds much like what we'd like to do. I'm impressed. We
need these grassroots programs around the country. Is there any way we
could set-up a separate, local plan (may we?) or set-up a 'branch' of
Ithaca Health Fund locally?" --Kelly
---[REPLY] Yes, the Fund has members in 21 states. We make payments
anywhere in the world w/any health provider. Members either have the
bill sent to us or send it to us for reimbursement. We're hoping to
inspire the formation of independent affiliated health funds. You can
join us at this stage, then spin off when you prefer.
--------
"I imagine you're familiar with The Onion
& their particular brand of humor -- in light of the impending
arrival of Wal-Mart in Ithaca, I thought readers of the ICN might get a
chuckle (of course, under the humor lurks the sad, sad truth) out of
this article:" theonion.com/3935/opinion1.html
--Kristie Snyder
--------
"Let me first say how great I think this
newsletter is & how glad I am to receive it. Your recent
announcement that you are running for mayor seems to be a very logical
step for someone like yourself who plays such a large role in our
community.
---"What is your position on alternative personal transportation? And
how do you see the city accommodating individuals who wish to embrace
ne transportation technologies?" --Tom
---[REPLY] I met Segway's inventor this year at the Sciencenter
& rode one at a Chamber Mixer.
---"I've specialized in ecological
urban design & find these a good fit. Like bicycles,
the cleanest personal vehicle, they should be provided more roadway.
Dean Kamen's invention should be permitted on sidewalks.
---"To the extent we have local authority to declare these roadworthy,
I'd seek to do so."

FRIEND OF LABOR AWARD 9/1/03 to TIM JOSEPH: excerpts from
statement by Carl Feuer: "Possibly no one else has been as perceptive
& eloquent and prolific as ascribe of letters & opinion
pieces on the themes of economic & social justice in the
Journal & elsewhere during this time. But he has been more than
a writer.

"I've just moved to Ithaca from the NY metro area &
would appreciate receiving your newsletter. It is required reading for
anyone interested in what is going on in town." --Barbara Wagner
---- "Hello! I have recently moved out of state but I want to keep
informed of things going on in Ithaca. Can you please add my name
again? Thanks so much!" --Anne-Marie
--------
"I'd like to pay my son's allowance in HOURS, but I don't
know how to start.
I am an activist now
doing human rights work in Guatemala. At the end of this year I will be
back in the U.S. & am very interested in the Ithaca area."
--Tony Banout
--------
"On 8/30 the Ithaca Journal ran a long article which showed
just how serious a problem the lack of affordable housing is in this
county. The article had data showing that the % of people paying more
than 35% of their income for housing averaged 42.8%, ranging from 51.6%
in the City of Ithaca (distorted by students) to 22.3% in Groton. Danby
& Enfield were both over 40%. If the Journal had used HUD's 30%
of income as the index point, then the numbers lacking affordable
housing would have been greater still!
--------
"Chuck Nocera (of the Tompkins County Red Cross) & I
have floated the idea for years of local governments offering tax
incentives to landlords who provide affordable housing or rent to
identified groups of people, which could include low income people. But
in this climate of federal & state budget squeezes, that's
really unlikely.
--------
"I know you are interesting in cycling & thought you
might like this site: Cyclists in Love" cyclists.perfect-match.co.uk/register.php

more nations & cities to your menu. NYS bike maps: dot.state.ny.us/pubtrans/bphome.html
--------
"Have you noticed that 'Ithaca is Gorges' T-shirts are
suddenly trendy attire for college students? They're everywhere! (Plus
I saw one in Portland OR this summer. ) I'm wondering whether you or
your News readers could shed any light on why the familiar design has
caught on this particular year. Were they given away at orientation?
Has there been a marketing blitz? Are they available in new locations
convenient to students? I'm tickled at seeing so many students proclaim
their admiration for their temporary home, rather than just complaining
about the cold winters. While we're on the subject, do you know who
created the original design, & when?" --Robinne
--------
"I imagine you're familiar with The Onion & their
particular brand of humor -- in light of the impending arrival of
Wal-Mart in Ithaca, I thought readers of the ICN might get a chuckle
(of course, under the humor lurks the sad, sad truth) out of this
article:" theonion.com/3935/opinion1.html
--Kristie Snyder
--------
"Let me first say how great I think this newsletter is
& how glad I am to receive it. Your recent announcement that
you are running for mayor seems to be a very logical step for someone
like yourself who plays such a large role in our community.
--------
"Some kind of transit rail system for this town, even from
the big box/ falls area to Stewart Park, & one line up to
Cornell would be incredible. Would it be feasible? We are running out
of road." --Brian
---[REPLY] The Ithaca Downtown Partnership is seeking funds to do a
feasibility study. If there's enough determination, it can be done. heritagetrolley.org
--------
"Let me know how I can donate to ICN. Thanks for a very
useful newsource & tool. I rely on it. --Margot B.
---[REPLY] Donations to this newsletter are welcome: ICN, Box ---,
Ithaca, NY 14851
--------
"I am thrilled to learn that you are running for mayor. I
believe the other three candidates are fine people who would each do an
adequate job of running the city, but they all lack your creativity
& vision for this community. Please let me know what I may do
to help." --Adam Chandler
---- "I love your mayoral
campaign platform-- practical, social & fun." --J.L.
--------
"Just wanted to drop you a note to say that I really enjoy
your bi-monthly Ithaca updates. I live in Washington, DC now, but it
gives me a great connection to home. Keep up the good work." --Susannah
---- "Please add me to your list. It is a continual source of
inspiration & innovation!" --Shannan Sullivan
