AMAZING ITHACA
November 9, 1962: Ithacans are invited to donate
their BRAINS to Cornell.
November 10, 1910: Whoopee! Seventy people on a HAYRIDE at Slaterville.
November 11, 1951: Sandy the cat is 20 years old. "He eats nothing but
liver & cold potatoes," says Mrs. Batzer.
November 12, 1908: Oldsmobile arrives from Rochester, completely
covered w/mud. Ithacan Fred Crum averages 22mph. "I don't believe in
speeding. Besides, I kill 8 to 10 chickens weekly as it is."
November 13, 1923: WOODLAND TERROR chases 6 dogs & 4 hunters
out of Asbury woods. Weird scream of some powerful beast creates panic
in that area.
November 14, 1910: NYS agrees to pave its roads within city. Top of the
list is Cliff St, an impassible mudpath ever since paving of Rte 96
outside city increased traffic on that road.
November 15, 1921: Police seize home-brewed PEACH MASH LIQUOR on Morris
Ave. Mr. & Mrs. Miles declared they were "going to move away
from Ithaca," & "didn't like this town nohow."

YOUR LETTERS
"Please add me to your email list for ICN. I just
stumbled on your website for the newsletter & saw your kind
attribution of the 'Ithaca is Gorges' slogan to dad. Good luck in the
mayoral race!" --Michael Cogan
--------
"In response to Joe Wetmore, the reason 'so many
prominent Democrats for Cohen' are supporting Carolyn Peterson, is
probably related more to the fact that she is by far the best candidate
in the race than by some Machiavelllian scheme to silently control City
government. I don't know about the others, but I really don't have time
to work on brainwashing new Council members & don't intend to
try." --Barbara Blanchard
--------
"What's your problem with Home Depot?" --anon
---[REPLY] This lovely city was built without Home Depot. Today, rather
than rely on a company that was enriched by selling rainforest lumber
& old growth forest lumber; & that dominates more
market share every year; & has faced class action suits for sex
discrimination & does random drug testing; & whose
developer here sued our city when asked for financial help to widen the
roads leading to it. Not my idea of economic development.
---Let's form the nucleus of a national building materials buying
cooperative, to promote sustainable yield of regional woods, fair trade
& nontoxic goods. Let's promote stuctural disassembly rather
than demolition, so that building materials are re-used. Let's change
building codes so we can rely more on straw bale & other
alternatives to wood.
---Relevant websites: fanweb.org/actionvan/homedepot.html

& news/capitol/020328depot_1a-8a.html
Every year, U.S. farmers produce enough waste from growing rice, wheat,
straw, corn, & soybeans to replace
all wood fiber currently used in paper & lumber:
--------
"What do you think are the most pressing
environmental choices faced by New York State voters this year, either
regionally or statewide?" --Lissa Harris
---[REPLY] New Yorkers need to decide whether we'll spend our national
wealth to fight wars to control foreign resources or instead to
dedicate ourselves to rebuilding our cities so they're energy
efficient. The New Patriotism says there's more money to be made,
& more jobs to be created, through repairing cities &
environments, than through warmaking.
--------
"I'm glad you're running for mayor. I'll vote for
you. I'd like to learn more about your plans for helping Ithaca become
an exporter. I'm a single mother / artist / part-time communications
person for Cornell, & I'm aiming to make a living partly by
selling my jewelry to far away customers via the Web. I also tried for
the Farmer's Market but found myself excluded because the group that
runs the market thinks there is a finite market & too much
competition from new jewelry craftspeople would cut into existing
profits. I'd like to see the Farmer's Market widened to allow more
sellers & to become a regional magnet for all that we Ithacans
produce in our own backyards & basements!" --Alice
---[REPLY] I also advocate expansion of the market & have
drafted plans for improved access. Ithaca can export food with a food
processing center (canned, pasta, dehydrated, tortillas), can create
more jobs by plugging other leaks in local economy: fuel &
insulation co-ops, nonprofit co-housing, nonprofit health funds
& dental/medical clinics, smaller more frequent buses, bike
lanes, interest-free local currency loans. Import replacement database
can connect us all to meet one anothers' needs.
--------
"The 10/6 issue of Business Week has an
interesting cover story, 'Is Wal-Mart too powerful?' Most of the
concerns about Wal-Mart's corporate behavior are pretty clearly stated:
impact of wages, impact on community, on culture, on suppliers. An
interesting day when the big guys' publisher notices what's going on."
--Bill
--------
"Another lovely edition of the Ithaca News. I was
impressed by the woman who wanted to pay her child allowance in Ithaca
HOURS! What a great idea! I will do the same. Now I have more
confidence allowance will be spent on worthwhile things.
---"Regarding affordable housing in Ithaca-- as a landlord, I am
repeatedly astounded at the cost of supplying housing in Ithaca. (by
the way we accept HOURS for rent). For example , we received 7 'garbage
violations' on one property over a 7 week period. One was for a ball of
yarn in the grass. one was for a ladder behind the garage. None were
for household trash. The fines totalled $1750. Yes, the decimal point
is in the right spot. We negotiated, but the point is, I could write
all day. With tax increases every year, the mortgage & the
initial cost of the house is only part of the expense. Affordable
housing is a problem, but there are many contributing factors." --Brian
DeYoung
--------
"Hi, I just wanted to alert everyone to the
'timber sale' that has been going on this summer in Shindagin Hollow.
It started with a large area right beside the road in the spring. After
returning from being gone for most of the summer, I discovered that
they have moved deeper into the woods. The logging is bad enough, the
lack of cleanup is especially apalling." --Garin [email protected]
--------
The city has raised taxi fares without addressing
the continual & deliberate overcharging, the frequently
horrible service, the livable wage policy for taxi employees." --[email protected]
--------
"I was questioning your reasoning behind the Green
assertions: 'Al From, chair of the Democratic Leadership Council, wrote
in Blueprint Magazine (1-24-01) that according to
their own exit polls, Bush would have beat Gore by one percentage point
if Nader hadn't run in 2000.'
---I suggest that you do a Google search on "The assertion that Nader's
marginal vote hurt Gore is not borne out by polling data" &
read what you find. Al From has jumped to very hasty conclusions here
-- who knows why, in a fit of depression perhaps?! -- & the
Greens have bought it." --M. R.
---[REPLY] Nader
'spoiler' issue was analyzed by Harvard prof: Gore would have
won clearly without Nader, but Bush would have won clearly without
Buchanan. Without either, Bush would have won, just barely.
---------
"[The trolley is] a wonderful idea. Sign me up. Of
course with a real transportation system, serving the 100,000 local
& transients populating the area nine months out of the year,
we'd finally let go of this 'small town' fantasy & make it a
place where one can actually enjoy living." --Keith D. Smith
--------
"Reading the [mayoral campaign] promo you gave me
tickled a not too old idea which I had proposed to a small list
recently, asking 'Why not a flat tax on all vehicles brought into the
county by students who were residing in the city/town of Ithaca for the
school year?' Students who resided in the county year round would be
exempt (am sure it would be unpopular with many students). ---"A good
part of my reasoning is that TCAT has excellent & extensive
service to both colleges (in my opinion & certainly compare to
outlying areas such as Brooktondale), which aren't that much of walk
from downtown any way. Benfits: reduced traffic & increased
parking when college is in session; more money in the tax coffers;
&, as you pointed out & I hadn't thought of, less wear
& tear on the highways." --Fern
--------
"I am excited to see that I won a gift
certificate. Keep the good news coming. This is a valued local
resource." --Amanda K.
--------
"Coming on the heels of the recent abortive
attempt by the Pentagon to start a global futures market on terrorist
activities (you win if something goes boom), the Bush administration
wants to slate $87 billion dollars to continue funding an already
misguided, discredited & disastrous military campaign. Money
that is intended to help ensure your safety; if you listen to the sales
pitch-- it's better than life insurance, really, which normally only
pays off if you die or lose a body part. Ask yourself if you want to
cash in your present insurance policy & set the money towards
Mr. Bush's 'insurance' scheme. Attention Smart Investors: Better take a
look at his previous business record first, just in case.
---"And where does this intended $87 billion come from? The rainy day
fund? Just what exactly is this money intended for? Rebuilding Iraq?
Considering all the billions we've spent already, we're not hearing
many reports of actual rebuilding going on. Heck, the Iraqi
infrastructure is so decimated from the invasion, the Iraqis are
still-six months later-importing their oil & gasoline, which
would be similar to the United States importing . . . what, 'reality'
TV? Since the end of the 'war,' the Iraqi water & electricity
systems have been dysfunctional, there's been a total breakdown of law
& order, the collapse of the economy, & massive
unemployment. And now we've recently modified our previous arrogant,
stand-alone stance and put out a call for the nations we so recently
regarded as "irrelevant" to "put aside old differences" and help us
clean up the mess.
---"'Another 9-11.' Weren't the U.S.-led aggressions on Afghanistan
(even though not a single 9-11 hijacker came from there) and Iraq
supposed to prevent another 9-11? No evidence has ever been found-not
one shredlet-that Saddam Hussein was ever involved with Al Queda, Osama
bin Laden, or the mass murder that resulted from the 9-11 hijackings.
---"So I don't really believe it's about money. If anything, money is
the medium employed by the politicians to distract us from the real
problems: political common sense, national & global
responsibility, termination of fear tactics (a perennial favorite of
dictators everywhere; why else do they threaten us with 'another 9-11'
as a consequence of not following their policies?), & concern
for & humanity toward those with whom we share this fragile
space--even if their country's government happens to be in the clutches
of a non-elected president bent on feathering the nests of his buddies
at the expense of the people." --George Sapio [email protected]
--------
"I am planning to vote for you in the mayoral
election & I was wondering if you need any help with your
campaign. I definitely think you are the best candidate!" --Varya
--------
"I have two friends who are City voters (whereas I
live in Lansing). They read your explanation of why you were running as
Green party candidate, & how some Democrats had asked you to
withdraw in favor of Carolyn. One of them wrote back to me, & I
must admit that I don't know how to answer his comment &
question: 'I have to admit that Paul's goals are the kinds of things
that have to be done in the long term. Unfortunately, Idon't see any
mention of how he plans to provide the interface between the automotive
transportation used by the rest of the country & a local area
that discourages them. It'd take some substantial construction to
provide places for people to park their cars, for example, a lot more
than is currently available. If it's a hassle to do, people will stay
away in droves.'" --Marc C.
---[REPLY] I've been promoting deliberate but orderly transitions which
gradually makes it easier to both get to Ithaca & move about
within by train, bus, bike & on foot. My belief is that there
are many people hungry to visit & live in an American city
which travels these directions. GETTING HERE: We'd proceed by
connecting automotive park & ride to free & frequent
(10 minute) shuttle vans. TCAT already has park &
ride facilities Visitors who show their shuttle or bus ticket
would receive significant discounts w/ area hotels, B&Bs
& merchants, plus ten free bus rides during 3 days. The shuttle
cost is paid by the reduction of traffic, traffic control &
road repair, traffic time, traffic accidents, & by the
attendant urban amenities/novelties which bring even more visitors
here.
---As bike lanes are installed, shuttle & bus riders could
transfer to colorful pedicabs, April-October, which would take them to
B&B or hotel, from which they're issued free loaner bikes.
Other bike facilities need be installed. Re-installation of the
heritage trolley-- Cornell-downtown-West End-- with free trolley
tickets for shuttle & bus riders, can accelerate this
transition. Those who bicycle here on the Black Diamond Trail when
installed, or other long routes, can be provided similar incentives
when they show proofs (bike tour booklet stamped along their route),
with greater perqs (as with local bike shops) for their greater
efforts.
--------
"What exactly is a 'Linderman Creek' rental
apartment, as opposed to, let's say, an apartment unit in Fairview
Heights, Kendal, Northwoods, Warrenwood, Titus Towers, DeWitt (Mall)
Apartments, Cayuga Apartments, West Village, Terrace Hill Apartments,
McGraw House, Fairview Manor & any one of a number examples of
high quality rental housing in this community?
---"Is 'Linderman Creek' a code word for ugly or, God forbid,
low-income housing?
---"I have seen nothing of the site plan or any other information
regarding this project, & until I do I will withhold any
judgment. I am however intrigued with the possibility of a developer
building 63 new dwellings, w/parking, on just 1.6 acres of land, in a
location which would offer not only convenient public transit service
but would be a 20 minute walk through the woods & Cass park to
Pete's via the future Black Diamond Trail & the Cayuga Inlet
Trail.
---"I have run the numbers, & it is possible to fit 63 units in
five 2-story structures, & 63 parking spaces, on 1.6 acres of
land. That would leave about 12 acres of the site (about 88%) as
permanent, wooded open space.
---"Let's get beyond the standard American white middle-class knee-jerk
reaction to any proposal for any type of housing that is not a
2,000-plus square foot single-family detached home in the country. That
bizarre notion that one hasn't 'made it' in America unless they own a
single-family home is responsible for sprawl, the destruction of the
environment, loss of critical agricultural lands, traffic congestion in
our neighborhoods, air pollution, high taxes & a host of other
problems.
---"I'm approaching this proposal with an open mind. I ask everybody
else to do the same thing." --George Frantz
--------
"I recently moved into the West Hill neighborhood
& became curious about a unique home near ours on Elm St. For
lack of a better term I have been referring to it as the Doo-Da house,
because the phrase 'Doo-Da' is colorfully painted on both the house
& the van that is often parked in front of it. Do you know of
any history of this house, or whether it is a home or community service
project of some sort? It's always interesting to learn more about those
who make Ithaca such a unique & vibrant community." --Robyne
---[REPLY] This is the home of Paul Sayvetz, carpenter and Ithaca's
first Green Party mayoral candidate. Doo-Dah reflects his philosophy of
color and fun, with grassroots antiestablishment flair. --------
"Thanks for including the Rock the Vote item in
your newsletter. Best of luck with your mayoral campaign... you have my
vote. By the way, do you know where I can get a yard sign or some other
sign that says "Vote Green Party"? --Will S.
---[REPLY] Glover for Mayor headquarters is 108 The Commons. Call

AMAZING ITHACA
November 9, 1962: Ithacans are invited to donate their BRAINS
to Cornell.

I just stumbled on
your website for the newsletter & saw your kind attribution of
the 'Ithaca is Gorges' slogan to dad. Good luck in the mayoral race!"
--Michael Cogan
--------
"In response to Joe Wetmore, the reason 'so many prominent
Democrats for Cohen' are supporting Carolyn Peterson, is probably
related more to the fact that she is by far the best candidate in the
race than by some Machiavelllian scheme to silently control City

Every year, U.S. farmers produce enough waste from growing rice, wheat,
straw, corn, & soybeans to replace
all wood fiber currently used in paper & lumber:
--------
"What do you think are the most pressing environmental
choices faced by New York State voters this year, either regionally or
statewide?" --Lissa Harris
---[REPLY] New Yorkers need to decide whether we'll spend our national
wealth to fight wars to control foreign resources or instead to
dedicate ourselves to rebuilding our cities so they're energy
efficient. The New Patriotism says there's more money to be made,
& more jobs to be created, through repairing cities &
environments, than through warmaking.
--------
"I'm glad you're running for mayor. I'll vote for you. I'd
like to learn more about your plans for helping Ithaca become an
exporter.
--------
"The 10/6 issue of Business Week has an interesting cover
story, 'Is Wal-Mart too powerful?' Most of the concerns about
Wal-Mart's corporate behavior are pretty clearly stated: impact of
wages, impact on community, on culture, on suppliers. An interesting
day when the big guys' publisher notices what's going on." --Bill
--------
"Another lovely edition of the Ithaca News. I was impressed
by the woman who wanted to pay her child allowance in Ithaca HOURS!
What a great idea! I will do the same. Now I have more confidence
allowance will be spent on worthwhile things.
DeYoung
--------
"Hi, I just wanted to alert everyone to the 'timber sale'
that has been going on this summer in Shindagin Hollow. It started with
a large area right beside the road in the spring. After returning from
being gone for most of the summer, I discovered that they have moved
deeper into the woods. The logging is bad enough, the lack of cleanup
is especially apalling." --Garin [email protected]
--------
The city has raised taxi fares without addressing the
continual & deliberate overcharging, the frequently horrible
service, the livable wage policy for taxi employees." --[email protected]
--------
"I was questioning your reasoning behind the Green
assertions: 'Al From, chair of the Democratic Leadership Council, wrote
in Blueprint Magazine (1-24-01) that according to
their own exit polls, Bush would have beat Gore by one percentage point
if Nader hadn't run in 2000.'
Sign me up. Of course
with a real transportation system, serving the 100,000 local &
transients populating the area nine months out of the year, we'd
finally let go of this 'small town' fantasy & make it a place
where one can actually enjoy living." --Keith D. Smith
--------
"Reading the [mayoral campaign] promo you gave me tickled a
not too old idea which I had proposed to a small list recently, asking
'Why not a flat tax on all vehicles brought into the county by students
who were residing in the city/town of Ithaca for the school year?'
Students who resided in the county year round would be exempt (am sure
it would be unpopular with many students). ---"A good part of my
reasoning is that TCAT has excellent & extensive service to
both colleges (in my opinion & certainly compare to outlying
areas such as Brooktondale), which aren't that much of walk from
downtown any way. Benfits: reduced traffic & increased parking
when college is in session; more money in the tax coffers; &,
as you pointed out & I hadn't thought of, less wear &
tear on the highways." --Fern
--------
"I am excited to see that I won a gift certificate. Keep the
good news coming. This is a valued local resource." --Amanda K.
--------
"Coming on the heels of the recent abortive attempt by the
Pentagon to start a global futures market on terrorist activities (you
win if something goes boom), the Bush administration wants to slate $87
billion dollars to continue funding an already misguided, discredited
& disastrous military campaign. Money that is intended to help
ensure your safety; if you listen to the sales pitch-- it's better than
life insurance, really, which normally only pays off if you die or lose
a body part. Ask yourself if you want to cash in your present insurance
policy & set the money towards Mr. Bush's 'insurance' scheme.
Attention Smart Investors: Better take a look at his previous business
record first, just in case.
--------
"I am planning to vote for you in the mayoral election
& I was wondering if you need any help with your campaign. I
definitely think you are the best candidate!" --Varya
--------
"I have two friends who are City voters (whereas I live in
Lansing). They read your explanation of why you were running as Green
party candidate, & how some Democrats had asked you to withdraw
in favor of Carolyn. One of them wrote back to me, & I must
admit that I don't know how to answer his comment & question:
'I have to admit that Paul's goals are the kinds of things that have to
be done in the long term. Unfortunately, Idon't see any mention of how
he plans to provide the interface between the automotive transportation
used by the rest of the country & a local area that discourages
them. It'd take some substantial construction to provide places for
people to park their cars, for example, a lot more than is currently
available. If it's a hassle to do, people will stay away in droves.'"
--Marc C.
Re-installation of the
heritage trolley-- Cornell-downtown-West End-- with free trolley
tickets for shuttle & bus riders, can accelerate this
transition. Those who bicycle here on the Black Diamond Trail when
installed, or other long routes, can be provided similar incentives
when they show proofs (bike tour booklet stamped along their route),
with greater perqs (as with local bike shops) for their greater
efforts.
--------
"What exactly is a 'Linderman Creek' rental apartment, as
opposed to, let's say, an apartment unit in Fairview Heights, Kendal,
Northwoods, Warrenwood, Titus Towers, DeWitt (Mall) Apartments, Cayuga
Apartments, West Village, Terrace Hill Apartments, McGraw House,
Fairview Manor & any one of a number examples of high quality
rental housing in this community?
--------
"I recently moved into the West Hill neighborhood &
became curious about a unique home near ours on Elm St. For lack of a
better term I have been referring to it as the Doo-Da house, because
the phrase 'Doo-Da' is colorfully painted on both the house &
the van that is often parked in front of it. Do you know of any history
of this house, or whether it is a home or community service project of
some sort? It's always interesting to learn more about those who make
Ithaca such a unique & vibrant community." --Robyne
---[REPLY] This is the home of Paul Sayvetz, carpenter and Ithaca's
first Green Party mayoral candidate. Doo-Dah reflects his philosophy of
color and fun, with grassroots antiestablishment flair. --------
"Thanks for including the Rock the Vote item in your
newsletter. Best of luck with your mayoral campaign... you have my
vote. By the way, do you know where I can get a yard sign or some other
sign that says "Vote Green Party"? --Will S.
---[REPLY] Glover for Mayor headquarters is 108 The Commons. Call
